Welcome to moments in History!

Who was the first President of the United States

BEFORE George Washington?

George Washington was indeed our first president under the United States Constitution, however, before it was ratified, our governmental charter was known as the Articles of Confederation. Each year, under the Articles, Congress would elect a president for their upcoming session, and the formal title was, “President of the United States in the Congress Assembled”.  In 1781, Congress elected John Hanson of Maryland, and he was recognized as our first president and head of state.  Each year a new president was elected until 1789 when The United States Constitution was ratified and replaced the Articles of Confederation.

I hope you enjoyed these historical minutes.  Another interesting event involves Jack Jouett,  Virginia's Paul Revere of the South,  who saved Thomas Jefferson from capture by the infamous British Colonel, Banistre Tarleton, during the Revolutionary War. To learn more, read my book,  "A Night that Saved Virginia".  The novella frames a fictional adventure story around Captain Jack Jouett's actual exploits that summer night in 1781.
